Early Detection Can Save Lives
An annual screening can find breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage. Our breast radiologists, certified mammographers and genetic counselors all work with one goal in mind – protecting your breast health.
A mammogram, the most common screening method, is a convenient option that takes only a few moments. Make your health matter by scheduling a mammogram today.
Mammography
A screening mammogram is a safe, low-dose X-ray. This diagnostic tool can catch early signs of breast cancer, sometimes before you can even feel a lump. The earlier we can catch cancer, the more treatable it can be.
Sanford Health recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. Your team will work with you to create a personal prevention plan.

If we catch an irregularity, you’re in good hands. We offer a variety of additional screening and diagnostic services:
- Breast ultrasound. A diagnostic tool that can detect breast cancer earlier – even in women with dense breast tissue.
- Breast MRI. MRIs provide insights into your overall breast health and can spot cancer at its most treatable stage.
- Breast biopsy. By examining a small sample of your cells, experts can get answers about your breast health.
- DEXA bone scans. Cancer survivors are at an increased risk of osteoporosis. Bone scans can identify bone density loss early.
If you're 40 years old or older, schedule your mammogram on My Sanford Chart.
Genetic Counseling
Certain genetic mutations can affect your breast cancer risk. Edith Sanford Breast Center offers genetic testing and counseling to determine if you’re at a higher risk.
Knowing your genetics empowers you to get personalized screening, care and treatment plans.

Dense Breast Tissue
If you have been identified as having dense breast tissue, you are not alone. Nearly half of all women do. And while this can make screening more difficult, we have the experts, technology and experience to care for your unique needs.
Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer
Many cancers develop by chance but some have a genetic component. Inherited gene changes can increase your likelihood of developing certain conditions, including breast or ovarian cancer. If you’re at an increased risk, genetic testing and counseling may be right for you.
