Microvascular breast reconstruction is a highly advanced technique where fellowship-trained surgeons essentially build a new breast from your own tissue. In most cases, this starts with a tummy tuck, taking skin and fat from the area, while keeping part or all of your muscle intact. Tissue can also be obtained from the thigh, buttock and back.

During the procedure, the area is magnified five to 15 times that of the naked eye, so your surgeon can detach your tiny blood vessels and nerves in a way that makes them easier to reconnect when placed in the chest area. Many patients experience less pain and more confidence with this option because the breast feels and looks more natural with less scarring. For women undergoing radiation, the procedure brings new tissue and circulation to the area, improving healing and lessening the chances for infection.

Rebuilding the Breast

The pre-pectoral breast implants technique is a relatively newer option in the world of reconstruction. In this procedure, the breast implant sits on top of your chest muscle, rather than being placed underneath. Advantages of this type include:

• Few to no additional visits for expansion
• Greater outcomes for patients undergoing a nipple-sparing mastectomy or a standard skin-sparing mastectomy
